Nonsense / Re: Creating small game?
« on: June 20, 2015, 04:10:08 PM »
I was going to make an incremental game like cookie clicker myself, but a bunch of other projects took over my life... I still have designs and ideas somewhere on my PC. If you take a look at the incremental games subreddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/incremental_games) you'll find a ton of inspiration for games like this. There's a few different UIs there, but I feel like there's a general trend that everyone's following... try to do something a bit different and new/fresh if you can.

As for platform, depends on what you're most comfortable programming with and who your target audience is. For Android you'd need to be comfortable with either Java or C# as you probably know. If you want to go for a web application, JavaScript (maybe with jQuery, Angular JS??) and maybe a bit of PHP and a database solution (SQL based for starters, I don't see the need to go for NoSQL at the start, only when/if the project grows bigger). For a simple desktop game, C++ would make a very robust game (and very likely teach you new things about programming), but can also just go with simple Java (Swing and AWT libraries) or even Python with pyGame!

It all depends on your programming skills and your target audience really. Decide on the platform using those two things. When it comes to design, look at the link above and see if you can find some inspiration from the games posted there. If you need any help with programming bla just send me a PM or post here! Good luck! :D

Memphis you tryed Unity game creator instead of java?

Nah, I haven't. I try to stay away from game engines and game creators as much as possible. I like doing as much of the programming as I can myself! Java already does too much tbh, and it does it poorly, but I'm forced to use it at University. I plan on moving on to C/C++ and Lua soon though

Who  banned me  ?No idea.Maybe a bug ?I don't know.Especially,Why they banned me? Could you tell me why and i banned ?  :blank: >:( >:( I have N3X Project and hacks are allowed i've done nothing wrong,i followed the rules. >:(

Hi Jeffrey. Please note that the rules say "Cheating is allowed" and the third line also says "Don't annoy other players, be nice". Using mods that are annoying and/or cause harm to the server is considered rule-breaking, so please make sure you don't use such mods here!

About being banned, Egg_Shen will be able to tell you the reason and hopefully unban you if he deems appropriate. You would have more luck in being unbanned if you posted a new topic (instead of a reply to an existing topic) with a clear format and language stating your in-game name and when you were banned.

Thanks for all the feedback so far guys!

I'll see what I can do about making the pieces fall down gradually instead of going straight to the bottom.
The images are not mine btw, and I'm still chasing up people to make sure they're okay with me using their images in my game, so some might change. I do like the idea of an animated/3D background. VTech, the background images do change every level btw, up to level 10!
About music/sounds... I tried to include audio and kinda failed, but perhaps in the future.
Full screen mode will not be a thing, unfortunately.

I was expecting problems with actually getting the game to run, but I'm glad people are able to play it!

Didn't play the game, no java atm, but the screens look awesome, lol @ the Game over man, game over!

Respect!

Thanks! I found out about that movie from you or Egg btw, or both... I think there was a sound clip of that line in the Red Faction server?

Tetris sounds like a nice project to do.

At the moment I'm programming Cluedo in C#, due in on Monday. Luckily it's just a console application but it doesn't make it any simpler! I've never even played Cluedo.

Yeah, it's a really good programming exercise for any language imo! You learn so much from it, and the fact that Tetris is a well documented game means that you already know what it should look like and what you need to program. It teaches you how to deal with problems such as representing objects in a game, performing animation and dealing with game logic. It's also a good introduction to graphics programming and you can make it as simple or as complex as you'd like. I spent 3 weeks adding stuff to my game, but some people started the assignment like 2 days before the deadline and somehow managed to end up with a very simple looking (yet fully functional) game! Here's what my professor's game looked like, and what he expected most students to achieve in the assignment:

Fun fact... this assignment is only worth 10% of the overall grade for the module. And yet it's the assignment which I spent most time on so far at Uni! And the only assignment that I didn't start 1 day before the deadline. And even funnier, I might only get around a 80% for this assignment, despite the effort I put in it (I wanted to get 100% :P)

Nonsense / Tetris

TL;DR:

Hey guys! This semester at University, I had to make a simple Tetris clone in Java. It's extremely simple, but it would help a lot if you could help me test it! It's going to enter a competition (University related too) and the source code is going to be published on my Github.
You can download the zip file attached, play it with A D S R keys and if you have time make a short post saying whether or not you could run it.

"Installing":

No installation required, just unzip the file. For Windows, you should be able to double click the file "TetrisPhix.jar" and play it. If not, double click the file "tetris.bat". For Linux (and maybe Mac OS) you can run the game from the terminal with "java -jar TetrisPhix.jar".

"Uninstalling":

Delete the TetrisPhix folder and the TetrisPhix.dat file. The TetrisPhix.dat file is in your home directory:
- Windows: C:\Users\<your-user>\TetrisPhix.dat
- Linux and Mac OS: /home/<your-user>/TetrisPhix.dat

Controls:

A - Move left
D - Move right
S - Drop piece
R - Rotate piece
P - Pause
Q - Quit/Main Menu

Gameplay:

- Classic mode: classic Tetris game with normal rules and TGM rotation (S, Z and I pieces only have 2 rotations instead of 4)
- Hardcore mode: Tetris game where you can only clear a line if all the blocks filling that line are the same color (i.e. a line must be filled entirely with only one color)
- Every line cleared grants 10 points.
- For every 10 lines that you clear, you will advance to the next level.
- The speed at which the pieces fall increases every level and caps at level 8 (I think :o)
- Every level has a different background image, up to level 10.
- When you lose the game, you can choose to enter your name to save your highscore. Highscores only save if they are higher than the lowest high score (i.e. if the lowest score is 100, you need a score of 110 for it to be saved)

Known/expected issues:

- Highscores table header looks ugly
- Highscores names might be cut off if too long
- Unable to read/write highscores file due to Java's idiotic security manager (fixed?)
- Unable to add new scores (fixed?)
- Text flickers on the main menu (fixed?)
- Text is black on the main menu, until you hover your mouse over it (fixed?)

Reporting test results:

If you play the game, it would help a lot if you could make a short post including:
- Operating system (including version like Windows 8, Mac OS X 10.10.1, Linux Mint 17.1, etc)
- Did it run? If not, what problems/errors did you get?

Optionally you can report on:
- Can you see highscores and save new highscores?
- Feel free to post any other issues and/or give suggestions
- Post a screenshot!

Initially, I didn't want to spend too much time working on this, but my professor is holding a competition to see who has the best Tetris game this Christmas, and the prize is a £30 Amazon voucher. Also, it'll look good on my CV/Resume/Github, so I really want to polish it and make sure it works and that the source code is clean and robust! But again, it's very very simple, and there might be some bugs, so please help me!
