The guy in the Vette was just putting on a show though. But yeah Clarkson did kind of have the advantage of size and his power fit the surface he was driving on better so he could keep the gas on longer than the super powerful vette. That's how other cars like the little AE86 can corner so fast, they have an excellent balance of power and handling which make them a nightmare in the corners for Skylines and other heavier cars.
Here's an example of that.
The video is at night so it's kind of hard to tell what's going on but you can see the AE86's tail lights pulling away. Anyway that's a Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo with 300 hp chasing the little AE86 and as you can see due to the Nissans weight (3500 pounds to the AE86's 2400) it can't go into the corners nearly as fast as the lightweight AE86 so all that power in the Z is useless.
